Outback Jacks – Restaurant for the wannabe Jilleroos & Jackeroos

Themed restaurants take on a whole new meaning, especially when they are from America. They have their “Australian” Outback Steakhouse, complete with a Bloomin’ Onion – because Aussies really love eating whole gigantic onions by themselves. Oh yeah, we just love digging them out from the ground with our bare hands and cooking it whole. Fortunately, the 100% owned Outback Jacks is as true blue as Steve Irwin – or at least that’s what they’d like us to believe, with a life-size fake crocodile hanging over diners’ heads. It serves as a slight hint to all non meat-eating human beings like.., “No entry to all Vegans, Vegetarians, PETA fanatics” – beware, we only really serve meat! (Almost literally! They only have 1 salad and 1 vegetarian lasagne available for the herbivioral inclined).

After hearing a lot of good things about how good Outback Jacks is, I took my visitor (Esther/$ensei) to have “Perth’s best steaks”. My dining companion ordered the Wagyu Platter and I ordered the Neptune Steak. Supposedly from the Gulf Country (ie around the Gulf of Carpenteria), the Neptune Steak looked like a bit of a rip off of Steak Oscar. The Neptune Steak uses “prime diamond cut” aged rump which is grilled and topped with sliced avocado (wasn’t the best avocado though) and a couple prawns all smothered with a thick bearnaise sauce. To be completely honest, I didn’t like my Neptune Steak primarily because the aged rump was SO tough to chew! Well, I guess they thought we all had teeth as sharp as the salties :-p It was almost like trying to eat a thick piece of cardboard where you may end up getting a jaw ache. I also thought the bearnaise sauce was pretty average with nothing to rave about.

Needless to say, I wish I had ordered my dining companion’s beautiful Wagyu Platter which consisted of Wagyu steak, beef patties, sausages, and other delicious items. Surprisingly, the wagyu platter was fairly reasonable which was definitely under the $60 range. It is really cheap compared to other wagyu steaks you can order around Perth. I wonder whether the meat was from home grown Japanese cattle, or meat imported from Japan/India?

Honestly, I wouldn’t say that my Neptune Steak was the best in the world but Esther’s Wagyu Platter was really good. So to answer the question of whether Outback Jacks is the best steakhouse in Perth or indeed Western Australia – I would have to say a resounding no. However, I would go again and order something else just to see whether I just struck out on the awful Neptune Steak.

ps – apologies about the awfully dark photos as we were seated in a corner that didn’t have very good lighting and my photography inclined dining partner was too lazy to snap proper pictures.
